This course is perfect for those who are looking for basic knowledege of radio frequency engineering. The student will get familiar with the so-called "transmission line theory" and its implications to modern RF and microwave engineering, with emphasis on circuit design aspects. Things to learn are, for example, how practical transmission line structures are made, wavelength, propagation constant, and characteristic impedance. Moreover, reflection coefficient, impedance matching, the Smith diagram, and scattering (S-) parameters are key concepts of RF and microwave engineering that this course introduces. The objective is that, after completing the course, student can design a very simple amplifier for the MHz and GHz ranges using a high-speed transistor and either distributed or lumped-element impedance matching structures.
Numerical evaluation scale (0-5)
Student must pass the exam. The exam is an open-book exam (materiaalitentti in Finnish). Students may use any printed or written materials on paper and any types of calculators except calculators of smart phones or other communication devices. No communication devices are allowed. A compass and a set square with degrees scale (harppi ja kulmaviivain in Finnish) may be needed in the exam.
