After taking the course, the student is able to identify, operate and perform measurements with standard aerosol measurement technologies. The student understands the underlying physical and chemical principles principles of the instruments and the limitations they cause for their operation. The student understand the diversity and challenges of measuring aerosols and is able to make informed selections on the methodology of aerosol measurement. The student is able to critically assess measurement reports and data. The student can search for information in scientific literature and is able present a critical review of the information. The student is able to perform measurements in a group setting, has the capability to analyse the data, evaluate uncertainties, and present the findings both orally and in a written report.

1. Aerosol measurement systems:The student understands the basic principles governing the measurement of aerosols, such as flow conditions, pressure difference driving flow, particle losses, etc. The student knows how to measure the essential parameters of the system.  The student is able to quantify the influence of aerosol dynamics during on the observations.
2. Particle counting and collecting instruments: The student understands the principles of operation and the detection efficiency of particle number counting instruments. The student are familiar with impactor-type and filter instruments.  The student can perform statistical analysis of a particle counting instrument¿s signal
3. Particle charging and electrical mobility: The student knows different methods of particle and cluster charging, and is able to calculate the charging state of the aerosol. The student understands electrical mobility and is able to compute the number size distribution from mobility data  The student is able to design the flow system aprropriately for a electrical mobility measurement.
4. Measurement of distribution moments: mass, surface, number: The student understands the distribution moments and the methods to measure them. The student is able to perform conversion calculations and apply moments in instrument inversion.
