ELT-47426 Transmission Lines and Waveguides, 5 cr
Transmission line analysis can be understood as an extension to the elementary circuit analysis or as a special case of the waveguide analysis. The course focuses on the latter and aims to build understanding that is needed to analyze properties of waveguides and cavities (TE- and TM-modes) in addition to transmission lines (quasi-TEM mode). Such knowledge is needed, for example, in many applications in RF engineering: directional couplers, waveguide filters, microstrip antennas, and dielectric resonator antennas.
The course begins with review of TEM waves and continues with analysis of static electric and magnetic 2D problems that are encountered in defining the transmission line parameters. Simulation tools and laboratory work is intended to supplement the analytical work.

||Exam and two assignments. Exam is preferably taken by completing a set of tasks.|
Upon completion of the course, * student is able to explain key features and limitations of the lumped circuit analysis, transmission lines, waveguides, and metallic cavities. * student is able to analyze signal propagation in transmission lines and waveguides and determine key parameters of such structures. * student has skills to use numerical design methods and tools to design and model transmission lines, waveguides, and cavities. * student is able intepret results of numerical simulations to reason properties of transmission lines, waveguides, and cavities. * student knows about practices in preparing technical reports and in giving peer feedback and is able to prepare a report that combines analytical, measured, and simulated estimates.
