Passing exam, solving 50% of exercises, and performe acceptably the work as part of mandatory laboratory experiments.


The student learns different aspects (terms, theory, basic working principles of devices, and applications) of the semiconductor technology related to the contents of the course and is able to apply this knowledge to the extent that is required in the examination.

1. The basic concepts related to epitaxy, thin-film deposition, and processing technologies of semiconductor materials   General knowledge on equipment used in fabrication  Understanding of interplay between fabrication parameters and the properties of devices and heterostructures 
2. The concepts describing the operation of most common optoelectronic devices, e.g. photodiodes, LEDs, semiconductor lasers, solar cells, modulators  Characteristics of optoelectronic devices and their relevance for applications  Understanding the relation between material properties, device architecture and device performance 
3. Measurement principles for assessing the operation of optoelectronic devices.  Use of characterization set-ups.  Knowledge concerning selection of instrumentation and building specific set-ups for device characterization. 

Ohjeita opiskelijalle osaamisen tasojen saavuttamiseksi

The total mark is determined based on a final exam (40% weight), student's activity in exercise classes (40% weight), and mandatory laboratory works (20% weight). Laboratory reports are required and reviewed and should meet the criteria of scientific reports. Analysis of the results, the structure, language, and style of the reports are assessed.
