After the course, the student has a generic understanding of the field of solid state physics as the most extensive subfield of modern physics today. The student understands the basic classical and quantum mechanical concepts behind the description of matter and different materials. The student has knowledge and understanding of lattice structures, metals, semiconductors, magnetism, dielectrics, superconductivity, nanostructures, and artificial condensed matter systems.

1. Bonding and atomic crystals  Lattice structures and theoretical modeling of lattices  Non-periodic solids, amorphous materials, van der Waals interactions 
2. Mechanical and thermal properties of materials  Defects, vibrations, phonons, specific heat  Thermal conductivity 
3. Metals: Classical and quantum mechanical approach  Free-electron model, density of states  Bloch theorem, Hall effect, quantum Hall effect 
4. Semiconductors  pn-junction, diode, transistor, LED  Solar cells, semiconductor quantum dots 
5. Magnetism, dielectrics, superconductivity, nanostructures  Diamagnetism and paramagnetism, magnetic ordering, polarizability, London theory, Meissner effect  Low-dimensional systems, BCS theory, quantum devices

Knowledge of the core material will be achieved by following the lectures & lecture notes, doing carefully all the exercises and participating in the exercise sessions.
