PYKÄLÄ II is a follow-up for this project. The project has started in the beginning of 2012 and lasts for two years. PYKÄLÄ II is carried out in close contact with the project cities. Other partners in cooperation are the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland’s Environmental Administration and The Network of Finnish Cycling Municipalities.
PYKÄLÄ II –project consists of four sections: developing pedestrian areas as part of city life, charting the potential of cycling in Finnish cities, improving the monitoring of walking and cycling and looking into the best practices in winter maintenance and cost-benefit analyses of cycling.
The project aims into providing information on the preconditions of the vitality and viability of pedestrian areas. The most important commuting flows favourable to cycling will be mapped using geographical information analysis. The project aims into developing the walking and cycling conditions in Finnish cities so that active transport would be enabled throughout the inhabitants’ whole life cycle.

There are nine Finnish cities (Helsinki, Tampere, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Pori, Lappeenranta, Hyvinkää, Kokkola and Lahti) and three departments of Finnish government (Ministry of Transports and Communications, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Education) involved in PYKÄLÄ II -project.
