Welcome to our Departments web pages!
The Department of Architecture was established in 1969, four years after the establishment of Tampere University of Technology. The first fifteen students commenced their studies in the autumn of 1969. The current number of students is approximately 480.
The studies in the Department take place in three institutes: The Institute of Theory and History of Architecture, The Institute of Architectural Design, and The Institute of Urban Planning and Design. The Department has also Media Laboratory for studies of computer-aided design and planning and visualization of architecture.
The number of new students of architecture has been restricted to thirty per academic year.
Starting in 2005 the degree for the Master of Architecture is divided in two parts: three years studies lead to Bachelor’s degree and further two years studies with the diploma thesis lead to Master’s degree.
Studies are pursued on three levels: a general studies level, a professional level and an advanced level. General studies include courses in arts, social sciences and languages. The professional level consists of courses in different fields of architecture, urban planning and design. The advanced level includes higher-level professional and advanced courses within each of the three Institutes. A diploma thesis project concludes the studies and leads to the Master of Science in Architecture degree.
The Department also runs a set of postgraduate courses leading to a pre doctorate degree called the Licentiate of Technology and further on to a Ph.D. or a Doctor of Technology degree. Normally, postgraduate students have their own research projects financed from outside the University, but some of the postgraduate work is carried out within the Department's research programmes.
In summary, the requirements for the Architect’s degree follow the requirements given by the Council of the European Communities (Directive 85/834/ETY/10.6.1985)
