XXXII SELL Student Games were held in Finland, in the city of Tampere 13-15th of May 2016. SELL Student Games 2016 had together 17 different sports in the program varying from futsal to chess and from wrestling to freestyle dance battle.
The Games were organized under the patronage of FISU and EUSA. In the end total of 1101 participants from 9 countries and 62 universities took part in the SELL Student Games in Tampere. In the opening ceremony performances of dance, acrobatics and gymnastics were seen in addition to the traditional speeches and flag march. The official Patron of the SELL Student Games 2016 was the President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö.
Seventeen different sports were in the program of the SELL Student Games this year. Team sports included basketball, volleyball, football7vs7, floorball, rugby7vs7 and futsal. Individual sports were athletics, judo, table tennis, disc golf, powerlifting, weightlifting, chess, badminton, wrestling, orienteering and freestyle dance battle.
SELL Student Games 2016 was organized by the Student’s Sport Club Tampere University of Technology, TUrVoKe, supported by the University, City of Tampere and Finnish Student Sports Federation. The central point of the event was located in Hervanta, Tampere, in the campus area of the Tampere University of Technology who was one of the main partners of the event.
Many athletes of high international level took part in the SELL Student Games as well. In men’s weightlifting (M105) Zygimantas Stanulis from Klaipeda University had the end result of 170 kg in snatch, which might be one of the best results made in Nääshalli sport venue ever. In athletics field Elmo Lakka from University of Jyväskylä run Finland’s Season’s best in 110m hurdles (13.81sec). Volleyball was the most popular sport in the Games with 17 teams together. For many athletes it was important to enjoy the atmosphere of an international student sports festival and visit a new city and have new experiences.
– The Games had a good atmosphere, we witnessed many good results and the athletes had a lot of fun. We had great number of sports in the Games this year and many new participants took part in SELL Games, which is very important to us to spread the word of the SELL Games, summarizes Saila Huhtiranta, Secretary General of the SELL Student Games 2016.
Next year the SELL Games will be held in the capital of Latvia, Riga 19-21th May 2017.
