Nature performs difficult tasks with perfection ensuing great simplicity and efficiency. Can we mimic nature to tailor different materials that can be used to treat diverse diseases or to mimic intrinsic cellular niche for tissue regeneration? Therein lies our focus and the passion behind our research. Using the principles of organic chemistry and material science and with the unique knowledge of cell-extracellular matrix interactions, we develop materials with well-defined properties to direct cellular function. Utilizing the biopolymers existing in our extracellular matrix we design drug and gene delivery systems and tailor highly modular and tuneable materials (e.g. hydrogels) and engineer cells for therapeutic applications.
