Nature performs difficult tasks with perfection ensuring great simplicity and efficiency. Can we mimic nature to tailor different materials that can be used to treat diverse diseases or to mimic intrinsic cellular niche for tissue regeneration? Therein lie our focus and the passion behind our research. Using the transformative power of synthetic chemistry and material science and with the unique knowledge of cell-extracellular matrix interactions, we develop materials with well-defined properties to direct cellular function. We exploit the immunomodulatory and physiochemical properties of extracellular matrix polymers such as hyaluronan, chondroitin sulfate, heparin, dermatan sulfate, etc. for designing nanocarriers for drug and gene delivery systems and tailor highly modular and tunable materials (e.g. hydrogels) and engineer cells for therapeutic applications.
