How to manage knowledge-based organizations?

Industrial manufacturing is increasingly moving from the industrialised countries to the developing countries. Knowledge-intensive organizations and business more generally is expected to replace or at least partly fulfil the gap induced by the decreasing high value-added production.

The main focus of research in Novi is on organizational level. We are seeking ways to improve performance of organizations. Solutions differ (r.g., in the public sector, in non-profit organizations and in companies), but for our work there is a common denominator – willingness to understand and support knowledge-based value creation. For us knowledge management plays a crucial role in delivering value for customers, internal interest groups and more widely for the society.

As researchers our task is to remain objective, step back and analyze how organizations actually operate. We typically start by analyzing the business environment of an organization through the lenses of our theoretical basis, that is, the knowledge-based view of the firm. From this arises our strategy to improve organizational performance through a more efficient utilization of knowledge.

Research streams of business intelligence, intellectual capital management and knowledge management are highlighted in our history, but today, we have a strong presence also in the areas of organizational learning and information systems. These are complemented with a special area of media management. This portfolio provides us a wide perspective to knowledge-based management challenges of contemporary society.

Our reserach is tightly connected with the practical management challenges and we could not attain our mission without a large group of organizations that take part in our research projects. Thanks to these connections, we are able to leverage a unique access to industry and public sector. Mutual interaction with our research partners provides leading edge problems, unique data sets, and the ability to implement and validate research findings and recommendations in a continuous interaction.

On our journey we seek answers for example to questions like:

  • How to attain and maintain competitiveness in a dynamic business environment?
  • How can technology and different working methods support knowledge-based value creation?
  • How to process and enrich information to support decision-making?
