Borrowing
You can borrow books by using a self-service lending machine or at the Loan Desk with the help of a circulation attendant.

You have to return or renew your loans at the end of the loan period. In case your loans are overdue you have to pay fines.

Library Card and PIN-code
You need a library card to use the Library. The library card is free and the student card can be activated to work as a library card. The library card is personal and the owner of the card is responsible for the items borrowed. Please inform the Library as soon as possible if your card is lost or if your contact information has changed.

Own loans can be checked in Tutcat-database. There you can also renew your loans and make reservations on books which are lent away.

A PIN-code is required whenever you log into your patron information to renew your loans or place a hold in Tutcat database. If you are logging in using your PIN for the first time, you must enter the default PIN, which is 12345. At the first time you login change the default PIN at the Personal Information page: click the Change PIN button. PINs are alphanumeric and between 5 and 8 characters long. Avoid using special characters. If you do not remember your PIN-code, the default code can be reset at the Loan Desk.

Loan periods
The loan period is five weeks, or two weeks for books marked with a yellow tag. Loan period for theses and journals published before the previous year is two weeks. Journals published this or last year are only for use in the Library.

P Lainauspiste textbooks are available as overnight loan 30 minutes before closing time. Before that you can use them only in the Library. Overnight loans must be returned before 10 am on the Library's next working day. If the Library is closed, the loan can also be left in the return box. Overdue fee is 8 €/book/day.

Tutcat
Tutcat is a database which includes bibliographical data of all printed books and journals held in the library. Our print resources are available to everyone in need of technological and scientific information.

Renewals
Two week loans can be renewed 2 times, five week loans 4 times and period text books (loan period 8 weeks, only for TUT students) one time.

You will be unable to renew your items if you have:

  • items which have been reserved by another customer
  • more than 10 euro in unpaid charges
  • renewed your items the maximum number of times

Loans can be renewed:

  • via the library catalogue Tutcat > Loan Renewal
  • at the Loan Desk
  • by email or phone

Reservations
In Tutcat you can make reservations for publications currently on loan. You will be notified by email when your reservation is available for collection. Making reservations is free, but if the material is not picked-up, you will be charged 1 €/item.

Returning
Borrowed items should be returned or renewed by the due date. When the Library is closed, books may be left at one's own risk in the book-return bin, located beside the Main Building main door. Items left in the book-return bin will be handled on the Library’s next working day. That date will be recorded as the return date.

If you have lost the book on loan, you have to either replace it by a new book or to pay a replacement price.

The patron is responsible for keeping track of the due dates and is therefore liable to pay fees for overdue items even if the patron has not received a reminder.

Late return of book - chargers

  • Text-book Loans 1 euro/item/day (max 30 €)
  • Other books 0,20 euro/item/day (max 20 €)
  • Overnight Loans 8 euro/item/day
  • Replacement of an lost item 85 euro/item and handling costs 8 euro/item + maximum charges (20/30 euro /item) If your total amount of charges is over 10 euro you will be unable to borrow or renew any items until you have paid your library fines.

Use of electronic resources

Tampere University of Technology Library provides online access to a large number of journals, books and databases. Access to electronic resources is governed by the terms and conditions of the licence agreements with publishers and service providers.  All users are also subject to the rules and regulations of the University IT services.

The electronic resources are available on site at the campus to the staff and students of the University, and most of the resources to the walk-in users of the library as well.  A VPN connection enables staff and students to have off-site access to the e-resources.

Access is controlled by IP address, but personal authentication is required by a few services.  You need to register to have access to Books24x7 and to RefWorks. The use of the TUT user identifiers is not advisable on registration. Your email address , however, must be the tut.fi address.

General terms and conditions
The electronic resources are largely made available by the FinELib Consortium licences. On the FinELib pages you can find the terms of use specific to each resource.  Below, there are links to the agreement terms of other electronic materials, too.

These terms apply to all electronic resources.

For private study, or for scholarly, educational or scientific research, you can

  • access, browse and search the journals, e-books and databases
  • download and print a small number of records, or journal articles

It is prohibited to

  • use robots, intelligent agents or other automated methods for systematic searching and storing
  • systematically download, store or copy materials
  • sell or make material available to a person not authorised to use the material
  • change or modify materials or software and make derivative products, or otherwise breach copyright

All commercial use of e-resource content is prohibited.

Please note that publishers monitor the use of the materials, and infringement of a licence may result in suspension of service to the University.
