ISBN and ISSN Numbers

The ISBN number is an international standard book number. It is given to all books and book-like items such as CD-ROMs or PDFs that are meant for public use. An ISBN number must be given to all separate formats of a publication as well as its revised editions. The physical format of the publication makes no difference; it can be a printed book or an electronic recording. The ISBN is a useful tool for handling publications in the acquisition of publications, international and national union catalogues, information retrieval and library circulation systems, for example.

The ISSN number is an international standard serial number for periodicals and serial publications. The purpose of the number is to mark off the serial publication or periodical from the other, publications, possibly with a similar title. Therefore, if the title of a serial publication is changed, the ISSN number must be changed, too

Further details about the ISBN and ISSN numbers and their use are available on the website of the National Library of Finland.

Publication series and doctoral dissertations at TUT

Both Tampere University of Technology and its departments publish various kinds of publications in their own publication series. There are four different types of publication series:

Julkaisu - Publication (e.g. for doctoral dissertations and other refereed publication series)
Tutkimusraportti - Research Report
Raportti - Report
Opetusmoniste - Lecture Notes

The Library keeps the information about the publication series and requests ISSN numbers when a new series is founded. The ISSN numbers are assigned by the Finnish ISSN Centre.

The majority of the doctoral dissertations prepared at TUT are published in the series Publications, but some doctoral candidates publish their dissertations in the series of other organizations. A title page template for the dissertations published in the series Publications is available at POP Portal (Doctoral Studies > Dissertation Process), login with TUT intranet account.

How to request an ISBN number and print a publication

When the publication is ready to be printed, you must request an ISBN number for it. Send an email to tty-sarjat@tut.fi with the following details:

  • author’s / editor’s name

  • title of the publication

  • format of the publication – printed or electronic publication (PDF, CD etc.)

If you plan to publish your report in a publication series, mention that in the email, too. The Library prepares a title page (the page after the front cover and the reverse of the page) based on these details which page you include in the publication. You should send two copies of the publication to the Library after the printing.

The printing service for TUT is provided by Juvenes Print which has an office on the TUT campus. Juvenes Print TTY prepares covers for the publications according to the graphic guidelines of TUT.
