Beverage vending machine
Located in Huili, on the Library's 1st floor.

Book-return bin
When the Library is closed, books may be left at one's own risk in the book-return bin, located beside the Main Building main door. Items left in the book-return bin will be handled on the Library’s next working day. That date will be recorded as the return date.

Borrowing
You can borrow books at the Loan Desk or with the self-service lending machine. To get a library card you need to prove your identity at the Loan Desk. TUT students can use the student card as library card. The student card has to be activited at the first time one wants to borrow a book.

Loan period is five weeks for books, two weeks for journals, theses, dictionaries, and textbooks (marked with yellow tape).

Change of address
Please inform the Loan Desk staff of any change of address so that recall notices and others may reach you more quickly and prevent fines from accumulating.

Checking own loans
You can check your loans in the Library's database Tutcat. Log in and you can check your loans, renew them or reserve books that are currently on loan. When you log in, Tutcat asks for the number of your library card, your PIN-code and your last name.

Collections
There are three main printed collections in the Library: books, old books and reference collection. The reference collection comprises reference books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, standards, abstracting and indexing journals, as well as directories and product catalogues. The library´s digital sources can be found in Web resources.

Computer room
Computer room PC201C is located at the Library's 2nd floor.

Cookies
Cookies must be enabled before you can use Tutcat with your browser.

Course material
Course materials for reading at the Library and for overnight loans are available at the Loan Desk.

Courtesy note
You receive a courtesy reminder in your email 1-4 days before the return date of your loans.

Departmental collections
Departmental collections (TTY Laitoskokoelma) are for staff use only. Books in these collections are not available at the Library.

Digital sources
Library has a wide range of digital sources. These include electronic journals, at the moment over 25 000, and electronic books (over 100 000) such as textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, patents and standards. All the digital sources are accessed via Library's Web resources. Web resources are organized by the type of the digital source, e.g. dictionaries, encyclopedias, sci-tech databases.

Entertainment
Magazines, newspapers for example Helsinki Times, commercials, conference brochures as well as coffee and soft drinks are available at the right back corner (when standing at the entrance) in the room called Huili.

Fines
Fines are charged for the late return of any item including items that have been recalled and are not returned by the notified date. Overdue books and journals incur a fine of 0,20 € per day per item. Textbook loan fines are 1 € per day. Overnight loans 8 € per day. Fines can be paid at the Loan Desk with cash or most common credit cards. More information from the price list.

Interlibrary services
Photocopies and loans from both Finland and abroad. Consult the Reference Desk staff for costs.

Journal circulation
Some journals circulate through the staff of the university. Before starting to circulate at the Campus, new journals are available for reading at the Library for two weeks at the Latest journals shelf. If you want to join to circulation of some journal, please fill in the Journal circulation application form.

Journals
The library receives ca. 350 printed journals and over 25 000 e-journals. The journals can be photocopied for private use according to Finnish copyright laws. New printed journals are available at a special shelf at ground level for two weeks. Newspapers are available in the entertainment corner, Huili. If you want to know whether a particular journal is held by the Library, check the Tutcat catalogue. Electronic journals are available via Web resources.

The lending collection
Approximately 100 000 volumes, mainly in science and technology. The loan period is five weeks, or two weeks for books marked by a yellow tag. Loans may be renewed if there are no reservations for the particular item.

Library card
To get a library card you need to prove your identity at the Loan Desk. TUT's students mostly use the student card as a library card.

Library Loans Return Form
When you are graduating, you need to attach the Library Loans Return Form to the application for the degree certificate. Please submit the filled application to the Library as an email attachment to lainaus@tut.fi. The Library submits the application to the appropriate faculty.

Loan Desk
At the Loan Desk you can borrow books, renew your loans, make reservations, inform about any changes to your address and buy copying cards. The Loan Desk is open during the Library's opening hours.

Loan periods
The loan period is five weeks, or two weeks for books marked with a yellow tag. Loan period for theses and journals published before the previous year is two weeks. Journals published this or last year are only for use in the Library.

Lockers
for books, bags etc., are in the Main Building's entrance hall outside the Library.

Lost items
If you lose an item you have on loan, you must replace it by buying a new copy or by paying a replacement fee.

Melinda
Melinda is a union catalogue of all Finnish libraries, available online.

Lost property
You can enquire about lost property at the Main Building's Info desk outside the Library.

Microfilm
A microfilm reader is available at the Library. More information available at the Loan Desk.

Nelli
NELLI (National Electronic Library Interface) portal provides end users with access to a variety of resources, such as databases, library catalogues and e-journals.

New books shelf
All new books are located in a specific shelf opposite the Loan Desk for two weeks. After two weeks the books are moved to the actual collection. Books in the new books shelf can not be borrowed, but it is possible to make reservations to these items.

Old books
Library's old books collection includes books, which have been published before 1980. The loan period for old books is five weeks.

Old journals
Journals, which have been published earlier than in 1980, are in the old journals collection. Old journals are at the back of the ground level.

During summer:

Overnight loans
Textbooks are available for overnight loan 30 minutes before the library is closed. Overnight loans must be returned next working day's morning before 10 o'clock. If not returned before 10 am, the fine, 8 euros per day is charged.

Patents
Shelf mark for patents is P Pat. Patents are located on the second floor of the Library.

Photocopying
There are two self-service photocopiers in the Library. You can buy copying cards at the Loan Desk.

PIN-code
PIN-code is needed for logging in Tutcat for checking own loans, for renewing loans or for placing holds. The default code is 12345, and you have to change it at the first session. PIN-code is 5-8 characters long. Avoid using special characters. If you forget your code, come to the Loan Desk where it will be reseted.

Pori
TUT / Pori Science Library in the city of Pori. Printed collections are catalogued in Tutcat.

Printing
There is no printer for customer use in the Library. Nearest printer for student use is outside the Library at computer room PC201B.

Ref
Shelf mark for the reference collection is P Ref for books on the 2nd floor and P Ref G for books on the 1st floor of the Library.

The Reference collection
The reference collection includes works of reference, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, standards, abstracting and indexing journals, as well as directories and product catalogues. These are not lent. The newest volumes can be accessed via Web resources.

Reference enquiries
General enquiries are answered at the Loan Desk. For subject enquiries, Reference Desk staff should be consulted.

Renewals
It is possible to renew loans, when there are no reservations. Renewal of loans can be made in Tutcat or at the Loan Desk. You can renew your loans twice (course books, journals, theses) or four times (books, dictionaries). Overdue fines will be charged if you can not renew your loans in Tutcat because of a service break. In any case of problems, please visit the Loan Desk or send us email to lainaus@tut.fi.

Renewal Service
The Library can automatically renew your loans that are due to expire for a fee. More information about Loan Renewal Service at the Loan Desk.

Reservation of books
If you cannot find a book on shelf, it is probably out on loan. You can reserve it at the Loan Desk. It is also possible to reserve a book in Tutcat. Reservation is free of charge, but the fee for reservation that is not picked up is 1€.

Searching for a particular book?
Use the Tutcat online catalogue when trying to find whether a printed item is held by the Library. When looking for digital book, use Web resources.

Self-service lending machine
There is a self-service lending machine next to the New Books self.

Silent study area
On the Library's second floor, called Hilja. No mobile phones, no group studying!

Shelf marks (Call numbers)
A publication has a shelf mark, which can be found on the screen in the location-row.

For institute collections the location is the name of the institute or person. Those books are not available for loan.

Standards
Call number for standards is P Ref G 006. Standards can also be found in other collections relevant to their subject. Some standards are available in electronic form in Web resources.

Statistics
Shelf mark for statistics is P Stat. Statistics are located on the second floor at the library.

Study space
Study space is available in the Library on both floors, with about 200 seats.

Theses
Master's Theses are located in shelf P TTY DI, Licentiate Theses P TTY Lis and Doctoral Dissertations P TTY Tri. The loan period for theses is two weeks. Some theses are also available in electronic form in TUT DPub.

The Library is an information services centre, subject to the Board of Tampere University of Technology. It is managed by the Library Board and the Director of the Library. The Library's services are available to everyone in need of technological and scientific information.

Tutcat
Tutcat
includes bibliographical data of all printed books and serials held by the Library. By logging in to Tutcat you can renew your loans and make reservations to books currently on loan.

TUT DPub and TUT Bibliography
In TUT DPub there are publications of the personnel working at the University as well as dissertations and theses. TUT Portfolio covers publications by staff at TUT since 1970.

User instruction
Courses for first year students, as well as for third and fourth year students, are given in Finnish. An introduction in English can be arranged on request. Contact Reference Desk staff.

Wireless internet access
Available at the Library.
