International Society for Bioelectromagnetism 9th ICBEM, 2013, September 5-8 2013, Geneva, Switzerland Background
The electric and magnetic fields
recorded from the body or cells are generated by the same phenomenon: the
electrochemical activation of the cells and tissue. Similarly, electric field
and current are induced in the volume conductor by the electric or magnetic
stimulation. This excites the tissue and cells. The electric and magnetic fields are
interrelated through the Maxwell equations. On the other hand, the electric
and magnetic lead fields are mutually independent as stated by the
Helmholtz's theorem. Thus it is important to discuss the biomagnetic
phenomena and bioelectric phenomena and the tools to analyze and model the
signals and sources and the biological systems generating the fields.. Bioelectromagnetism
Bioelectromagnetism is a discipline that examines the
electric, electromagnetic, and magnetic phenomena which arise in biological
tissues. These phenomena include: ·
The behavior
of excitable tissue (the sources) ·
The electric currents and
potentials in the volume conductor ·
The magnetic field at and beyond
the body ·
The response of excitable cells to
electric and magnetic field stimulation ·
The intrinsic electric and
magnetic properties of the tissue. The
Purpose of the Society
The Purpose of the International

Journal of Bioelectromagnetism, IJBEM
The Society established in 1999
the International Journal of Bioelectromagnetism,
IJBEM. It is a peer-reviewed scientific journal in the field of bioelectromagnetism. It is available on the Internet free
of charge to all persons interested. A printed version of the Journal is also
available.
