New professorship promotes sustainable building

Campus

The School of Architecture and the Department of Civil Engineering at TUT are launching a new form of collaboration in education and research. The departments, placed under the Faculty of Built Environment, will establish a professorship in sustainable design and construction in response to the current needs of Finnish construction industry.

The departments within the Faculty of Built Environment constitute a unique, multidisciplinary environment that fosters interaction and innovation. Research results achieved at the faculty are readily incorporated into the curriculum. The departments have organized joint courses, among others, on building technology, urban planning and ecological construction.

The field of the new professorship ranges from sustainable communities and construction to building lifecycle management and the environmental, social and economic impacts of construction industry, with a special focus on the energy efficiency of buildings, long-term durability, renovation and urban infill development.

According to Dean Teuvo Tolonen from the Faculty of Built Environment, the new professorship opens up new avenues for interdepartmental cooperation and sets the direction for future interaction between architecture and civil engineering at TUT. The professorship brings together research in the two disciplines, is closely connected to business research and promotes a broad-ranging and cross-disciplinary approach to education.

"Through this professorship, we're looking to create interesting new openings in research and education and launch collaborative projects with construction industry, the public sector and other business partners. In addition, the professorship will support the faculty and its departments in building new contacts and promoting internationalization."

The successful candidate must hold a doctorate either in architecture or civil engineering. The application period is currently open and will close on 15 December 2011.
