Duration of the exchange study periodThe academic year at TUT is divided into two semesters, the autumn semester and the spring semester. During the academic year there are five teaching periods, and there is an examination week(s) at the end of each teaching period (please see the academic calendar for exact dates). During the summer months (except for the month of July) some courses are lectured (mainly in Finnish) and there are some possibilities for examinations and research work at the departments.
The autumn semester begins late August/early September and ends at the end of December. The spring semester starts early January and ends late May.
There are three options for an exchange study period at TUT:
1.The student can choose to study for the whole academic year (teaching periods 1-5). The academic year begins late August/early September and ends late May.
2.The student can choose to study during the autumn semester (i.e. teaching periods 1-2). In this case the students would need to choose courses that are lectured during those two teaching periods.
3.The student can choose to study during spring semester (i.e. teaching periods 3-5). The spring semester starts early January and the students would finish their exchange study period at the end of the fifth teaching period (late May). In this case the students would need to choose courses that are lectured during the third, fourth and fifth teaching period.
A student can apply to TUT as an ERASMUS or an exchange student, if:- the student is studying at one of TUT's Partner Universities
- the student's home university is participating in a student exchange program with TUT (e.g. SOCRATES/ERASMUS, NORDPLUS, GE4 or others)
If there is no valid exchange agreement a student may still apply to TUT as a visiting student, a so called freemover. Each freemover student application will be evaluated case by case. The total amount of exchange student applicants will have an impact on the decision-making process, too. Contact International Office, interoff@tut.fi, with questions concerning freemover applications.
Students with special needs should contact the International Office to discuss the arrangements for their stay in Finland and TUT.
