Software Engineering (led by Prof. Hannu Jaakkola) focusing on Software process improvement (analysis and development of process models and standards as well as process assessment and improvement methodology development and application), Software architectures (studying opportunities for developing flexible system architecture (SOA), supporting a loose network of sub-systems; studying how to improve and enhance new service solutions for mobile devices) and Cultural issues in software engineering (recognition of the differences between national cultures in networked and distributed software organizations).
Mobile applications and learning games (led by Ph.D. Kristian Kiili) focusing on modelling learning processes, user behaviour and user experience in games as well as the development of educational games.
Telecommunications (led by Prof. Pekka Loula) focusing on IP-based access / core network technologies, protocols, wireless transmission methods, network security mechanisms and quality of service.
Signal processing and mathematical modelling (led by Profs. Tarmo Lipping and Juha Tanttu) focusing on bioacoustics (bird song analysis), physiological signal analysis (Electroencephalogram analysis for brain monitoring in anaesthesia and intensive care), geographic information modelling (landscape modelling and remote sensing data analysis) and mathematical optimization (industry-oriented research)
Electronics materials (led by Prof. Pekka Ruuskanen) focusing on materials used in printed electronics as well as magnetic and functional materials.
Industrial management (led by Profs. Hannu Vanharanta and Rainer Breite; a more detailed description of the research activities in this field is given in the Self-Assessment report to the assessment panel of Business and Technology Management)
