Pedagogical Objectives

The objective of the language teaching at TUT is to provide the students with the opportunity to develop their language and communication skills so that they are able to follow international developments in their own field and to function with ease in the communicative situations required for their careers. A further objective is for the students to continue developing their language skills after they have finished studying. Thus, the students are taught versatile communicative skills which cover all aspects of a language. Furthermore, the aim is to develop the students' intercultural understanding.

The Language Centre offers several courses which concentrate on different areas of technical and academic communication, such as the language for work, business communication and scientific writing.

In describing, implementing and evaluating the study modules for European languages, the language centre follows the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference.

The relatively small group sizes (about 20 students) enable efficient teaching which promotes communicative interaction between the students as an integral part of the learning process. The language centre teachers are all qualified experts in their own fields, in addition to which many of them have specialized knowledge and experience in a variety of different areas. Naturally, as part of educational institution which specializes in technology, the TUT language centre utilizes modern communication technology in its teaching. For example, there is a modern self-access centre designed for students who wish to pursue independent language study.
