Over-voltage protection

Overvoltage protection of mainly distribution networks using different protective devices, i.e. surge arresters, spark gaps, externally gapped surge arresters, is one of the research areas of the research group of High Voltage Laboratory. Overvoltage studies of the networks are carried out using suitable calculation software but a notable part of the research in this area has been focused on the properties, durability and ageing of different protective devices under varying conditions.

Behaviour and ageing of surge arresters in diverse environmental conditions has been an intensive area of research in the past but also currently. In this area of research a cooperation with a Brazilian research group from the University of Campinas has started recently in a three years project (2011 – 1013), where performance of polymer housed surge arresters in different environmental conditions will be studied.
