Services for business

The department carries out contract research for companies within the focus areas of its research. The

projects may range from pre-studies and MSc thesis projects to large goal-oriented research entities. Typically the company gets all IPRs to the research results.

For Finnish companies, projects funded by the National Funding Agency for Research and Innovations (TEKES) are a good starting point for company-university collaboration. The projects can be parallel TEKES co-funded projects at the university and in companies, or the companies can participate as co-funding partners in the university research projects. As a rule of thumb, the partners get usage rights to the university research results and a priority in commercializing them.

The department is also highly experienced in participating European research programs, such as EU 7th Framework Programme, ARTEMIS, and ITEA. The companies are welcome to join already in early phases of project proposal preparation. This kind of project is excellent in fostering international networking, and it benefits the company by integrating their individual results into a larger framework created by the consortium. In most cases all the partners share the usage rights to all project results, but the ownership remains with the partner who originally produced the result.

In the conferences and exhibits organized by the department, the enterprises have the opportunity to network as well as get visibility for their own expertise by participating the event as a sponsor or exhibitor. The conferences and their tutorial days are also helpful in updating your own knowhow.

Also tailored training, support services for the open-source developments of the department, and consultation can be provided case by case. The department also licenses out software, hardware descriptions and patents originating from independent research.

More unofficial services are represented by, e.g., supervision of doctoral students and MSc thesis workers employed in companies.
