Networks and protocols research group (NPG) focuses on network architectures, issues in ubiquitous and vehicular networks, and network security. The group has been studying various networking topics, primarily QoS related issues, since 1996. Current topics include the quality of peer-to-peer based streaming systems (application layer); the performance of TCP in wireless networks, combined with cross-layer issues (transport layer); problems with IPv6 transition mechanisms, NATs, mobility, multicasting and multi-homing (network layer); analy-sis of random access based MAC mechanisms, suitability of IEEE 802.11 and 802.16 wire-less standards for the communications between moving objects, and energy efficiency of those solutions (link layer). Additionally, roaming architectures, home networks, middleware performance issues, network security and trust mechanisms are examples of topics covering several layers in the layer model of communications. The group is led jointly by Prof. Jarmo Harju and Prof. Evgeny Kucheryavy. There are 3 post-docs, one lecturer (with Ph.D. degree) and 6 active Ph.D. students in the group. Additionally, there are typically a few visiting Ph.D. students and 5-10 research assistants and other M.Sc. students working for their thesis in the projects supervised by the senior researchers of the group.
