Research
Department of Communications Engineering has a wide scope in communications engineering including topics from upper layers (networking) down to the physical layer (transmission) and communication circuits. Radio network planning and signal processing for positioning are also included in the research focus areas. These areas are reflected in the division of the Department into four research groups which together employ about 80 people.

Research focus areas
-
Networks and protocols research group (NPG) focuses on network architectures, issues in ubiquitous and vehicular networks, and network security. The group is led jointly by Prof. Jarmo Harju and Prof. Evgeny Kucheryavy.
-
Digital transmission group (DTG) focuses its activities on signal and system models, waveforms, and signal processing algorithms for digital communications. The group is led jointly by Prof. Markku Renfors and Prof. Mikko Valkama. The mobile positioning activities are led by Senior Research Fellow Elena-Simona Lohan.
-
Radio network group (RNG) addresses the theories and techniques related to the design and techno-economical optimization of mobile cellular networks. The group is led by Prof. Jukka Lempiäinen.
-
RF communication circuits group (RFCC) focuses on integrated RF-circuit design for wireless communications. The group is led by Prof. Nikolay Tchamov.
