History
The Department was founded in the beginning of 1992 when responsibility of this field was handed over from the Department of Electronics to the newly Department, and systematic development of research and teaching activities of this field started with broad scope at TUT. In the beginning, there were a professor, an assistant and a researcher. During the past 19 years, the Department has developed to an internationally renown unit of 6 professors and about 80 members of personnel.
During the years, the professorships of the Department have been held by Markku Renfors since 1992, Petri Jarske 1994-2004, Jarmo Harju since 1995, Nikolay Tchamov since 1996, Jukka Lempiäinen since 2001, Tapani Ristaniemi 2003-06, Mikko Valkama since 2008 and Evgeny Kucheryavy since 2010.
