Hydrogen is a promising form of bioenergy due to its high energy content and lack of harmful emissions. However, manufacturing hydrogen for fuel is not energy efficient with current methods, but novel methods based e.g. on microbial bioprocesses are needed. This project focuses on studying the function of hydrogenase enzyme and seeks means to enhance hydrogen production by improving the oxygen tolerance of the enzyme. Suitable molecular structures added to the enzyme work to enhance oxygen tolerance. The modified enzyme surpasses the efficiency of wild type microbial hydrogenases since improved oxygen tolerance enhances hydrogen production in an aerobic environment and simplifies bioprocess control.
