Research

The department forms a multidisciplinary team capable of broad range of basic research and applied research in the field of BME. This enables us to work towards novel technological solutions for healthcare products. We consider ourselves as one of the leading institutes in Europe on research on bioelectromagnetims and its applications and development of bioabsorbable polymer implants.

BME at TUT and its precessors has developed and commercialized first in the world many bioabsorbable implants from bone fixation implants such as crews and plates to scaffolds for joint repair. Our research has been important in defining the basis for the development of the science of bioelectromagnetims.

The strategic goals of the department are to develop technology and engineering solutions for future intelligent human spare parts as well as for telemedicine solutions. Under these topics we can broadly utilize the expertise of the department and our local and international collaborators, BME industry and healthcare stakeholders.

The department strives for publishing its research achievements in high quality scientific peer reviewed journals. Further our strategy is to actively support innovation and commercialization of our results with developing education, active innovation and patenting policy, as well as fostering of spin-offs. The department and its precessors have produced 150 patent and over 500 referee journal publications. Currently we produce about 50 internatioanl referee journal articles annually.

The main areas of expertise and research are:

Biomaterials science and tissue engineering:

  • Bioabsorbable materials
  • Bioactive glasses for clinical applications
  • Processing and characterization of biomaterials

ICT technology and medical physics:

  • Biomedical image and signal analysis
  • Telemedicine and eHealth technology
