The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a multidisciplinary department employing novel applications of materials science, electrical engineering and information technology for the benefit of healthcare. Our aim is to develop advanced treatments and diagnostics for the needs of different types of healthcare providers. The department employs six professors and a staff of roughly 60 people.
The strategic goals of the BME are to develop technology and engineering solutions for future intelligent human spare parts, as well as for telemedicine applications. This research is financed mainly by the Academy of Finland, Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation), the European Union, and several private foundations and companies.
We offer research and laboratory services also for biomedical engineering industry and other research organizations.
BME is a highly international department, since merely 60% of our staff is native Finns, and the rest come from all over the world. We are also active in international collaboration and researcher exchange. The department hosts Master's Degree Programme in Biomedical Engineering.
Our education covers biomedical engineering in multidisciplinary fashion, and our students come from several different B.Sc. programs of TUT. To access the international Master's Degree Programme, the applicant follows a direct admission and applications procedure.
The BME operates in three locations in Finland: TUT campus, Finn-Medi in Tampere University Hospital campus, and MediWest Technology Center in Seinäjoki.
BME is a part of the Faculty of Science and Environmental Engineering.
