Surface Engineering of Pulp Fibres: New Functionalisation Concepts for Smart Fibre Products

Principal Investigator at ASE: Prof. Pasi Kallio
Duration of the project: 2009 – 2011

Project description:
The role of fibres and fibre bonds in the runnability of a paper machine and the strength of the paper sheet is not well understood. To increase the understanding new experimental methods for the characterization of strength properties of individual fibres and bonds are needed. Furthermore, novel concepts to enhance especially the fibre strength their and bonding capability are needed.

To fulfil the aforementioned needs, the project aims at
• Multi-functionalizing pulps to create new fibre products with outstanding optical, mechanical and chemo-responsive properties,
• Developing a new platform for automatic characterization of the strength properties of individual paper fibres and fibre bonds.

ASE’s role is to develop an autonomous microrobotic platform which allows for the characterization of individual fibres and fibre bonds. Our aim is to develop a method which facilitates automatic measurement of several hundreds of fibres / fibre bonds in a day.

In the project, ASE has already developed a tele-operated platform and demonstrated measurement of fibre flexibility, bond breaking and bond strength measurement as illustrated in the following figures.

The project has been elected as the Project of the Month of the MATERA programme in 02/2011.
