Principal Investigator at ASE: Prof. Pasi Kallio
Duration of the project: 2006 – 2010
Project description:
The project was funded in two parts: 2006-2007 and 2008-2010. The general objective of the project was to develop new approaches to improve industrial flow processes by using “smart technologies” such as smart materials, smart actuators and sensors. In particular, the project focused on passive and active flow state management, enhancement of mixing processes and enhancement of flow structure interaction management.
In the first stage, ASE / MST’s role was to review and perform feasibility studies on actuators based on active materials in the flow management problems. In the second stage, from several options we focused on an enhancement of mixing processes using a commercial high pressure piezoelectric dispenser.
Chemical dispensing capabilities of a commercial piezoelectric dispenser was experimented, a control algorithm was developed and the developed system was demonstrated as a coagulant dosage system in a flocculation process for waste water treatment.
