To obtain a doctoral degree, you need a supervisor who oversees your progress toward the degree. In addition to a supervisor, you may have one or more instructors. Often the supervisor acts as the instructor.
In case you are interested in doctoral studies and already know a possible topic for your research, you should first contact either the faculty/department where research in your field is conducted, or a potential supervisor or instructor whose research interests are closest to yours.
Before you contact a possible supervisor or instructor, please consider the following questions:
Applicants should contact a professor by email (enclose a CV and a research plan with your message) and ask the professor to supervise their doctoral studies. Applicants are advised to send the formal application only after receiving a positive response from a professor.
International doctoral students are strongly recommended to apply for scholarships, grants or other type of financial aid from sponsors in their home countries or from international foundations or other funding agencies. International doctoral students should be financially self-sufficient, as TUT is not able to offer them scholarships.
The aim of doctoral studies is always the completion of a doctoral degree. In case you are not interested in obtaining a doctorate but are looking to achieve a deeper understanding of your field in a more informal setting, you can choose to attend TUT’s Open University or pursue continuing education. Almost all the courses included in TUT’s curriculum are available to Open University students. Within the framework of continuing education, the University offers training programmes that allow individuals to pursue professional development or complete a degree as well as customized development and training programmes.
