A doctoral dissertation is a thesis that students seeking a doctoral degree prepare to demonstrate their ability to produce new scientific knowledge. Completing a dissertation requires that the student is capable of conducting independent scientific research. Dissertations are written in a language approved by the faculty council. At TUT, dissertations are usually written in English.
A doctoral dissertation may take the form of a single monograph written by the doctoral candidate or a compilation thesis. The latter refers to a number of scientific publications or manuscripts accepted for publication that are accompanied by a summary. The publications may also include co-authored publications, in case the independent contribution of the doctoral candidate may be demonstrated. A dissertation may also be a work that meets other corresponding scientific or artistic criteria.
The requirements that doctoral dissertations must meet may differ slightly between faculties. Please discuss the requirements with the supervisor of your studies.
