Textile and Fibre Materials

Research projects are carried out in collaboration with industrial partners, meaning that results can be directly exploited in practical terms.

The research group of Textile and Fibre Materials provides excellent facilities for research including several special laboratories. Additionally, the group offers testing services in the field of textile technology.

The research covers the fibre raw materials generally, their processing into various products, the properties of products and development applications. Examples of the research programmes are the development of new products or the controlling of process variability.

 Textile and fashion value chains

During the past 20 years globalization has radically changed the European textile and fashion industry in regards to business strategies, growth performance and employment perspectives. The value chains became truly global with production in low cost countries and marketing in the developed world. Managing such supply chains is challenging. The research focus of Fiber Materials Science has been on the success factors of global fashion chains, especially, regarding financial performance and corporate social responsibility. Forecast accuracy, process lead time, offshore/local sourcing mix and up-front/replenishment buying mix are often defined as critical success factors in connection with sourcing seasonal products with a fashion content. Several projects have been carried out with national and international financing. The findings of recent research suggest that there are more profitable ways of sourcing products than buying them from low-cost offshore sources at low price.


Smart textile materials and wearing comfort

Research and development of smart textiles is often very cross-scientific. Many other skills, such as electronics, telecommunications, biotechnology, medicine, etc., are needed beside textile know how. It is this complexity and broadness of knowledge that makes smart textile research interesting but also challenging. Thermo-regulating, color change and shape memory are some of the properties applied to smart textiles. Phase change and shape memory fabrics are already commercially available and they are especially used for improving wearing comfort and clothing physiology. Various types of international institutes have been networked to Fiber Materials Science to carry out smart textile research successfully.
