Ceramic Materials

Ceramic materials offer education by combining the basic understanding of all materials to deeper expertise in ceramic materials. The main research interests include mechanical properties of engineering ceramics; fatigue, wear behaviour of ceramics, porous ceramics; ceramic filters and membranes, corrosion behaviour of ceramics, high temperature properties of ceramics and bioceramics. The activities on functional surface properties cover research on basic mechanisms, such as surface energy, surface charges and surface forces, which control such properties as adhesion, self-cleaning ability, fouling of material surfaces.

In all these areas strong emphasis is on the understanding of the relationships between the processing, structure and properties. The most important industrial applications of the materials studied include hot gas cleaning in advanced energy technologies and dewatering by ceramic filters in mining and process industries, paper and pulp machinery, diesel engines, structures and components of boilers and related components, moulds and tools.
