Bio and circular economy - Tampere University of Technology

Bio and Circular Economy

The bio and circular economy research group focuses on synthetic biology (led by Asst. Prof. Ville Santala), environmental technology (led by Prof. Jukka Rintala) and energy and biorefining (led by Prof. Jukka Konttinen). The ultimate goal of the research is to promote a cleaner and safer future for the benefit of people and the environment. The group covers research from basic research from molecular biology level up biorefinery and power plants and to urban and industrial systems.

The group´s research aims to promote a cleaner and safer environment with key focus areas being:

  • New production methods for renewable power and heat
  • New biorefinery concepts for biomass, metals, and nutrients
  • Next-generation characterization of energy, carbon, and other material cycles in the urban environment
