Urban Planning and Design

The research group studies cities, city regions and urban-rural interaction, as well as spatial analysis, urban planning, design and management. Its research perspectives include planning systems and practices, complex processes, critical view to power in planning, public space and experiential urbanism, planning history and urban heritage.

The research group of Urban Planning and Design includes the teams of professors Juho Rajaniemi and Panu Lehtovuori, the Seinäjoki Urban Lab led by professor Ari Hynynen (known also as Alvar Aalto Chair), as well as EDGE Laboratory for Architectural and Urban Research and AML Architecture Media Lab led by Anssi Joutsiniemi.

To the group are associated university lecturers Minna Chudoba, Martti Lamppu and Jenni Partanen, post doc researcher Jorge Garcia Fernandez, adjunct professors (docents) Lieven Ameel and Markku Norvasuo and about 15 active doctoral students and research assistants.
