Research groups representing the international leading edge have increased the University’s international cooperation. There are more international research projects underway every year and the number of international publications is growing. In 2010, 15 per cent of all postgraduate students were non-nationals.
Even though the volume of extensive research projects has increased at the University, cooperation in research and researcher exchange based on bilateral agreements has maintained a firm position. For example

Nationally funded research projects (funded for example by Tekes) enable companies to participate with typically 5-25% of funding. These projects combine scientific, technical and commercial know-how and give participating companies possibilities with exploiting the research results in industrial setting.
Tekes-funded research projects are common at TUT: yearly number of projects is around 200. Tekes also funds Strategic Centers for Science, Technology and Innovation (SHOK) which are clusters of companies and universities gathered in certain thematic areas.
Companies have the possibility to partner with TUT in international research projects. TUT's research groups representing the international leading edge have increased the University’s international cooperation. Companies have had the opportunity to partner with the University in EU research projects and for many companies this has been their first contact with international research activity. TUT participates actively in international funding calls. In 2010 a total of 49 EU-funded projects were underway at TUT, five of which were coordinated by the University.
Research can be implemented as commissioned research, in which case a company commissions research from a TUT institute. In year 2010 the volume of TUT commisioned research was approximately 17 MEuros. Commisioned research done at TUT is confidential. Research results and the IPR related to them is transferred to the company who commisioned the research. The rights to publish and use the results are agreed on case by case. University wishes also the commisioned research results to be published if possible.
TUT departments and laboratories offer different laboratory and measurement services for companies. Find more information about the versatile equipment and possibilities from Units.
Commissioned research may entail an extensive research project, a smaller-scale research service or a M.Sc. thesis.
