FAQ

1. When can I apply for admission to the Open University?

Students must apply for admission to individual courses at least two weeks before the course begins.

The application round for the Fast Open University Track opens in November-December. Application to the Extended Open University Track is open all year round, except between mid-May and mid-July. The Open University Track to studies in architecture is open in July-August.

2. Is it possible to complete the gateway courses as distance learning courses?

No.

3. How much does it cost to study at the Open University?

The course fees are EUR 10 per credit.

4. Where are the courses arranged?

Courses take place at Tampere University of Technology in the Hervanta suburb. The campus map is available under ‘Contact information’ on the Open University website.

5. The room numbers include both capital letters and numbers. What do they mean?

The letters F, K, R, S and T stand for the buildings on the TUT campus (for example ‘T’ stands for the Tietotalo building). The first number refers to the floor where the room is located. For example, room K1705 is located in the Konetalo building on the 1st floor, and room TB221 is located in the Tietotalo building on the 2nd floor. Please note that in Finland the term ‘first floor’ means the ground floor.

There is an info desk in each building that you can visit for further instructions.

6. Are courses given during weekends?

No.

7. Are Open University students eligible to receive student financial aid?

No, the state does not pay financial aid to Open University students.

8. If an Open University student is admitted to TUT as a degree student, are the courses completed at the Open University counted toward the degree?

Yes, they are. The courses offered at the Open University are comparable to those available at TUT. They are recorded into the Study Register and counted toward the degree that the student is pursuing at TUT.
