Major and minor subjects

The students specialize in one of the two alternative areas, both of them worth 35 credits: Mechatronics and Micromachines or Factory Automation.

Students will study their minor subject based on their major. Students in Mechatronics and Micromachines study Control in Robotics and Automation as their minor. Students in Factory Automation will take Micromachines as minor studies.

Master's Thesis

The master's thesis is written on a subject connected to the major subject. The subject of the master's thesis may be applied for when a student has a sufficient amount of advanced studies in the major subject. The Faculty Council approves the subject of the master's thesis and appoints at least one examiner for the thesis, who is a professor or holds a doctoral degree in the major subject in question or for special reasons some other person appointed by the Faculty Council. The master's thesis is also evaluated by the Faculty Council. Those members of the Faculty Council who hold higher degrees participate in the evaluation.

The master's thesis is prepared individually. For special reasons it may also be accomplished in group work. In this case the contribution of each participant must be demonstrated. In connection with the thesis, the student has to write a maturity test, which is an essay on a topic related to the thesis. The test demonstrates the student's command of the thesis topic. The test has to be settled up with the examiner of thesis.

Language

The official language of the programme is English, i.e. courses, exams and student services are arranged in English. Consequently, proficiency in both written and spoken English is required. International students are required to submit an approved English language when applying to the programme. However, the course Finnish for Beginners (3 credits) is compulsory during the basic studies, as it gives a good basic knowledge of the language for everyday life and also provides a brief introduction to the Finnish culture.

Starting the studies

The academic year starts in the end of August and ends in the end of May. It is compulsory for the new students to participate in the orientation week for the international students which will be held in the end of August 2011. Durign the orientation week students will participate several info sessions about studying in TUT and in the programme.
