Provisions concerning the title of an adjunct professor (Finnish: dosentti) are set forth in Section 89 of the Universities Act (558/2009). The President of the University may, upon application, award the title of adjunct professor to a person who holds a doctoral degree, or has completed the theses required for a doctorate, and possesses comprehensive knowledge of his/her field, the ability to conduct independent research or artistic work demonstrated through publications or in some other manner, and good teaching skills. The title of adjunct professor is awarded for a fixed term of five years at a time.
The traditional requirement for awarding the title has been that the breadth of the candidate’s scientific publications corresponds to at least two doctoral dissertations.
Adjunct professors may participate in teaching activities in their fields, provide information and advice to students, supervise and examine theses and take part in other academic activities in a manner to be separately agreed upon.
A person applying for adjunct professor status must contact the head of the department, which is closest to the field of the professorship, to discuss whether the proposed adjunct professorship is needed and falls within the scope of the department.
After consulting the head of department, the candidate prepares an application addressed to the President of Tampere University of Technology. There are no formal requirements for the application, but it must be signed and clearly state the field of the proposed adjunct professorship.

Candidates are recommended to deliver their applications and enclosures in English, because the experts appointed to review their qualifications may not be Finnish.
