About the Workshop

This three-day workshop will concentrate on the recent developments in asteroid and comet research. It will cover both the surface and interior structures the latter of which still remain mainly unknown. Recently, both scientists and space organizations have indicated increasing interest towards the interior related to, e.g., the macroporosity, mineral composition, collisional evolution of the solar system, and also advancing the design of future asteroid deflection concepts.

With this multidisciplinary workshop, our aim is to advance the formation of a concept for creating a complete 3D model of a small body. This will necessitate planetary science research, ground-based and spaceborne observations, versatile mathematical modeling and simulations, and mission design. The topics to be discussed will include: (1) Interior, (2) Shape, (3) Global structure, and (4) Planetary missions and mission design. Each keynote speaker will present a problem which will be tackled in a group. The findings by the groups will be reported and discussed in the end.

On Monday September 3rd, 2018, we will organize a satellite meeting concentrating on space education. Presentations in the category Space Education  will be part of the satellite meeting.

This workshop is supported by the Academy of Finland Key Project on Low and High Frequency Inverse Imaging and the AoF Centre of Excellence in Inverse Modelling and Imaging. We welcome presentations regarding all these topics and look forward to meeting scientists and students from all over the world in Tampere.
