VTT and TUT launch major research collaboration in mechanical and production engineering

The VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Tampere University of Technology (TUT) have agreed to engage in extensive, strategic research collaboration and set up Finland’s largest research alliance in the field of production, manufacturing and materials engineering.

Companies will gain access to the multidisciplinary expertise and collaboration networks of VTT and TUT on a one-stop-shop basis. The goal is to promote the competitiveness and export activities of Finland’s manufacturing industry. Special emphasis is placed on SMEs.

The annual volume of research collaboration between VTT and TUT will amount to 40 million euros.

“The collaboration will provide companies with easy access to a broad range of expertise. The combination of our systematic approach and the latest research findings will enable us to create added value for our customers and thereby open the door the new export opportunities and promote company development even amidst economic turbulence,” says Jouko Suokas, Executive Vice President of Smart Industry and Energy Systems at VTT.

The bottom line of SMEs in the technology industry can be improved, among others, by boosting the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry. The prerequisites for maintaining a competitive edge include up-to-date products and production processes, increased digitalization, and extensive utilization of the Industrial Internet. Effective networks, alliances and new business models are also required.

“The research community wants to contribute towards turning the economic tide. New expertise and technology have the potential to significantly increase the competitiveness and productivity of the manufacturing industry,” says TUT’s Vice President for Research Ulla Ruotsalainen.
