TUT welcomes 895 new Finnish students

A total of 895 new Finnish students have been admitted to Tampere University of Technology (TUT) through the national joint application process for university education in engineering and architecture.

The names of the admitted students will be published on the University’s Finnish-language Admissions website (http://www.tut.fi/hakuinfo/haku-tty/opiskelijavalinnan-tulokset) on 5 July. New Finnish students must accept their place in the programmes on 31 July at the latest. Their studies will begin with a Freshman Orientation Week on 20 August. Older students will begin their studies a week later on Monday, 27 August.

A total of 3,843 Finnish students applied for admission to TUT this year. The acceptance rate was 23 percent. Finnish students are admitted based on their performance in the Finnish matriculation examination in upper secondary school and the University’s entrance examination. Altogether 373 applicants gained direct admission based on their performance in the matriculation examination and 522 students were admitted based on both the entrance examination and matriculation examination or solely on the entrance examination

Of all the newly admitted students, 59 percent graduated from Finnish upper secondary school this spring and 30 percent are women.

“The percentage of female students has grown steadily over the past few years, which is in line with the University’s aspirations to increase the number of women pursuing a career in engineering,” says Head of Student Services, Ms Kirsi Lindfors, who has also graduated from TUT.

Judging by the number of applicants and places available, the degree programmes in Architecture, Biotechnology, Science and Engineering, and Industrial Engineering and Management were the most popular. The degree programmes in Civil Engineering, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering also attracted a large number of applications. Admission to the degree programmes in Biotechnology, Science and Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management, and Environmental and Energy Technology required the highest grades in the matriculation examination and entrance exam.

The majority of the newly admitted students, 35 percent, come from the Pirkanmaa province.

In addition to students who were admitted through the national joint application process to pursue bachelor’s studies at TUT, students who already hold a bachelor’s degree were directly admitted to complete a master’s degree at the University. A total of 292 such students were admitted to master’s degree programmes conducted in Finnish and 443 to programmes conducted in English.

Application numbers continue to grow

The number of applications that the University receives from Finnish students within the framework of the joint application system continued to grow in 2012. The number of applicants rose 7 percent and reached 3,843. In 2011, this number was 3,582. The number of applications increased as well: the University received 7,295 applications in 2012 and 6,697 applications in 2011. As evidence of TUT’s growing popularity, altogether 2,569 applicants, or two thirds of all applicants, had selected TUT as their first choice.
