TUT confers 175 doctorates and 8 honorary doctorates - watch the ceremony live online
TUT’s eighth doctoral conferment ceremony will be held on 17-19 May. The ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees will take place at Tampere Hall on Friday, 18 May. A live webcast of the ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees on 18 May 2012 at 12-15.

At the conferment ceremony, 175 doctors who have graduated from Tampere University of Technology (TUT) will receive doctoral hats as the symbol of academic freedom. All the conferees have obtained their doctoral degrees since TUT’s previous conferment ceremony, which was held in spring 2007. A total of 382 persons have completed a doctorate at TUT between 2007 and 2011.
In addition, honorary doctorates are bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the fields represented at the University or in recognition of other extraordinary contributions to science, art or society. The University will confer eight honorary doctorates:

Professor Amos Gilat, Ohio State University, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, USA
Professor Yongxiang Lu, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China
Professor Karl Öiger, Tallinn University of Technology, Timber and Plastic Structures, Estonia
Vuorineuvos (Finnish honorary title) Ole Johansson, Chairman of the Confederation of Finnish Technology Industries EK
Mayor Timo P. Nieminen, City of Tampere
Teollisuusneuvos (Finnish honorary title) Paula Nybergh, Ministry of Employment and the Economy
Professor Riitta Suuronen, University of Tampere, Tissue Engineering
According to academic tradition, the longest-serving professor at the University acts as the Conferrer of Degrees. This year, the Conferrer will be Professor Reijo Karvinen from the department of Energy and Process Engineering. The Master of Ceremonies will be Professor Tuomo Tiainen from the Department of Materials Science.
The first conferment ceremony at Tampere University of Technology was held in 1982. Conferment ceremonies have been arranged every five years since then, except in 1995, when the ceremony was held to celebrate the University’s 30th anniversary.

12.30 Ship leaves for Viikinsaari Island. Brunch and dancing on the island. Departure at 16:00.
