The Department of Physics enters the second stage of Academy’s CoE call

The Board of the Academy of Finland has selected the research groups that will proceed to the second stage of the Academy’s Centre of Excellence call. Two of the successful applications involve the Department of Physics at Tampere University of Technology (TUT).

The first project concerns research in the field of ultrafast and nonlinear nanophotonics which is headed by Professor Martti Kauranen from TUT. The second one concerns research in lipid-protein interactions, which is conducted under the supervision of Academy Professor Elina Ikonen (Biomedicum, University of Helsinki) and also involves the research group headed by Ilpo Vattulainen at TUT.

The Academy of Finland will request 34 research groups to prepare the final application for funding. The Centre of Excellence call includes two stages: last spring the Academy received 128 letters of intent covering a wide variety of research fields. The Academy's Board will meet in June 2013 to decide which groups will be awarded Centre of Excellence status for the period running from 2014 to 2019.
