Science event lit up KoskikeskusResearchers from TUT introduced the general public to the properties and applications of light in Koskikeskus Shopping Centre on Saturday, 16 May. Especially the invisibility demo was a hit among the audience.
Experiments that illustrate the behaviour of light and the role it plays in our everyday lives were on display in Koskikeskus. Children had the opportunity to test leds and measure the width of their hair together with the researchers.
”We were delighted that the demos drew in hundreds of people and some of them ended up staying for quite a long while,” says Professor of Physics, Dean Martti Kauranen.
Part of the UN International Year of Light
The event was part of the International Year of Light 2015 of the United Nations. The theme year raises global awareness of how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health.
The year 2015 also marks an important milestone for Tampere University of Technology. The University turns 50 and commemorates the occasion with a series of events and activities running throughout the year. The demos showcased in Koskikeskus will be exhibited during Technology Days (22–24 October) and in the Museum Centre Vapriikki (22 October 2015–1 February 2016).
