PoDoCo Programme promotes the employment of doctoral graduates in industryFinnish companies, foundations and FIMECC Ltd. have joined forces to launch the Post Docs in Companies Programme (PoDoCo) in a bid to promote doctoral graduates’ transition from academia to industry. PoDoCo covers all academic disciplines.
The Post Docs in Companies Programme aims to raise awareness of doctoral graduates and their expertise among industry and business and offer better incentives to encourage the private sector to hire doctoral graduates. All companies are welcome to join the PoDoCo Programme, which is available for young doctors who have recently completed or will soon complete their doctoral degree.
At Tampere University of Technology (TUT) the PoDoCo Programme is part of a broader industry collaboration framework.
”From TUT’s perspective, PoDoCo is a logical continuation of our Doctoral School for Industry Innovations. It’s a new instrument for expanding our University’s long-standing tradition of collaborating with industry,” President Markku Kivikoski says.
Services for newly graduated doctors and companies
The PoDoCo Programme provides doctoral students, who have recently graduated or are approaching graduation, with access to information about the specific R&D challenges of companies. PoDoCo provides a platform for matching doctoral graduates with companies. Financial support for spending a research period in a company is also available. The partner companies are kept up-to-date with newly graduated doctors and doctoral candidates and are offered the opportunity to tap into their expertise.
Post Docs in Companies
- The purpose of the Post Docs in Companies Programme is to promote the employment of doctoral graduates in industry and facilitate the renewal of Finnish industry and business.
- The programme is sponsored by KAUTE Foundation, the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Finnish Foundation for Technology Promotion and the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation.
- FIMECC Ltd. is responsible for the practical implementation of the programme.
Doctoral graduates who participate in PoDoCo are expected to demonstrate an interest in the challenges facing the private sector and the ability to apply research findings. Companies are expected to demonstrate an interest in the development of an analytical approach to their business challenges and problem-solving processes.
“There’s a need to promote the transition of doctoral graduates to industry and thereby enable industry and business to further increase their level of expertise. We’ve secured the support of multiple financiers to the PoDoCo programme,” says Professor Yrjö Neuvo of Aalto University. He was the driving force behind the establishment of PoDoCo.
