Open position: Senior Research Fellow
Optoelectronics Research Centre is seeking a Senior Research Fellow in the field of Interface Physics of Nanostructured MaterialsOptoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at Tampere University of Technology, founded in 2000, is the leading research center in optoelectronics and photonics in Finland. High-quality fundamental and applied research is carried out in two main research areas, which are (i) Nanotechnology and (ii) Ultrafast and Intense Optics. In 2013, ORC runs 40 research and collaborative projects, has a budget of about 6.0 M€ and employs 70 people.
Job description: We are seeking a Senior Research Fellow whose main tasks are:
1. To be in charge of the daily operation of Surface Science Laboratory’s (SSL) surface analytical research infrastructure, the quality and productivity of daily research and publishing activities of SSL staff, as well as selected aspects of laboratory safety.
2. To coordinate the research activities of SSL at international large scale research facilities (LSRFs, e.g. synchrotron radiation sources), writing of proposals for research time grants, implementation of research activities at LSRFs and reporting. Coordination tasks also include establishing and maintaining international collaboration networks that support SSL’s research at LSRFs.
3. To develop and coordinate analytical methods and research infrastructure at SSL with particular emphasis on spectromicroscopy and supersonic molecular beam surface scattering techniques.
4. To work at the interface between SSL and other research laboratories at ORC, finding synergy in research activities and promoting collaboration in research, researcher training and funding of research.
5. To actively pursue complementary funding and conduct original research as a Senior Research Fellow.
6. To supervise of BSc, MSc, and DSc theses related to surface science
7. To support Professor(s) at SSL in administrative and professional duties.
8. To participate in teaching when required
Requirements:
The successful candidate shall be expected to possess an applicable Doctoral degree and a demonstrated record of achievement regarding scientific work as well as teaching skills required for the position. The position shall also require the competence to lead a research team and obtain complementary funding.

In addition to the formal requirements, a successful applicant is expected to have:
- at least 10 years of hands-on experience in surface science, vacuum science and technology as well as utilization of synchrotron radiation in surface analytical research
- demonstrated competence in designing, building and developing ultra-high vacuum research systems for surface analytical investigations
- expertise in a wide range of surface scientific techniques: photoelectron spectroscopy with laboratory-based radiation sources (XPS, UPS, AES), synchrotron radiation mediated photoelectron spectroscopy (High Resolution PES, Ambient Pressure PES, NEXAFS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), supersonic molecular beam surface scattering (SMBSS), temperature-programmed desorption and reaction (TPD/TPR) spectroscopies and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).
- familiarity with techniques for fabricating nanostructures on surfaces
- ability to successfully seek complementary research funding
- ability to collaborate with both experimental and computational research groups
Good communication skills in English are indispensable for the work in an international research group.
We offer:
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and work experience in a world-class semiconductor research facility developing cutting-edge optoelectronic devices.
