New boost sought for industry and business in Tampere: €1,000,000 up for grabs in a competition

The Tampere3 partners – Tampere University of Technology, the University of Tampere and Tam-pere University of Applied Sciences – organize a competition sponsored by the City of Tampere to find research and commercialization projects that provide a boost to local industry and business.

The competition is aimed at funding projects that deliver maximum added value to industry and business in Tampere. The total prize money of one million euros will be shared between three pro-jects, each receiving 300 000 - 400 000 euros.

The teams that enter the competition must include members from at least two of the Tampere3 partners. The teams may be, for example, existing groups or newly established groups made up of researchers, students and teachers.

“This competition is a great opportunity to seek new or additional funding for a re-search and commercialization project that also aims to affect the local business life. With this competition, we can promote the research cooperation between our local higher education institutions in the Tampere3 spirit and in a highly practical and con-crete manner,” Vice President Ulla Ruotsalainen notes.

Cross-cutting and multidisciplinary ideas

The project proposals submitted to the competition may focus on research, the application of re-search results, product development, or the development of novel concepts, services, etc. and their introduction into the market. We are looking for ideas, concepts and research themes that cut across disciplinary boundaries. The proposed projects are expected to promote the regeneration of industry and business in Tampere.

Among other aspects, the proposals will be evaluated based on such criteria as originality and inno-vation, the commercial and international prospects of the expected results and their potential to open up new business opportunities and create new jobs in Tampere.

Competition divided into two stages

The competition was launched on 18 May 2016 and it will close at 11:59 pm on 24 August 2016. All proposals will undergo an initial screening process in August-September 2016. Short-listed candi-dates will be invited to present their project to a jury consisting of representatives of the three higher education institutions and the City of Tampere. The final award decisions will be made by a commit-tee gathered by the City of Tampere and comprising representatives of industry and business, re-search institutions, and organizations that provide funding for research and business. The winners will be announced on 30 September 2016.

Proposals can be submitted on an electronic form either in English or Finnish.
