Mika Hannula is TUT’s next presidentThe Board of TTY Foundation has today selected TUT’s current Vice President for Education, DTech Mika Hannula as the new president of Tampere University of Technology (TUT).
Due to the accelerated schedule of the Tampere3 process, the new president will take office on 1 April 2016. TUT’s current President Markku Kivikoski will remain in office as an adviser to the Board of the TTY Foundation and the newly-selected president until the end of his term, 31 July 2016. Mika Hannula’s term of office will end on 31 December 2020.
“During his term from 2008 onwards, President Kivikoski has meritoriously followed through several substantial changes, including the establishment of the TTY Foundation, strategy-based profiling and the launching of the research infrastructure investment programme. In recent years, he has been strongly involved with the initiation and advancement of the Tampere3 process,” says Tero Ojanperä, Chairman of the Board of TTY Foundation.
TUT was seeking a capable president with demonstrated skills in change management and international networking, along with a solid knowledge of scientific, educational, technological and innovation policies. Ten candidates applied for the position, three from within TUT and seven external to TUT.
The newly-selected President Mika Hannula will be heading a university that fosters the well-being of people and the environment, reshapes the competitive landscape of Finland and courageously explores new avenues of research and education in the fields of engineering. Through the Tampere3 process, TUT is currently creating a new operating model for the Finnish higher education in collaboration with the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Applied Sciences.
“I believe Mika Hannula to be capable of further developing TUT according to the strategy while also remaining strongly involved with the Tampere3 implementation,” Ojanperä notes.
“The objective of the Tampere3 process is to create an inspiring and multidisciplinary environment for research and education, drawing from the interdisciplinary frontiers and also carrying great national and international significance and appeal.”
