Local knowledge a key asset to global construction industry

The doctoral dissertation of MSc (Tech) Karam Al-Khazarji highlights the valuable contribution that educated immigrants can make to globally operating construction companies.

Educated immigrants already represent a sizeable talent pool on the global scale. They possess a unique combination of language skills, cultural knowledge and technological expertise. Moreover, their local knowledge can help open up new business opportunities and build export success.

Karam Al-Khazarji analyses, among others, the experiences of Finnish construction companies involved in building Baghdad Conference Palace in Iraq between 1978 and 1982. For his dissertation research, he developed and tested several models for utilizing the expertise of qualified immigrants, or BBTs (Bilingual, Bicultural and Technology expert).
