The International Dry Toilet Conference, running from 19 August to 22 August, brings together environmental and sanitation professionals from all over the world. Now held for the fifth time, the conference is arranged every three years to provide a forum for academics, policymakers and grassroots organizations to discuss the challenges and solutions related to sustainable sanitation.

This year’s conference attracted close to 170 participants from 34 countries and features more than 70 speakers. The keynote speakers are Postdoctoral Research Fellow Dana Cordell of the University of Technology Sydney and Professor Naoyuki Funamizu of Hokkaido University.

The conference is organized in collaboration by the Global Dry Toilet Association of Finland, Tampere University of Technology, the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Applied Sciences.

A dry toilet is an easy and cost-effective solution, for example, for sewage treatment in sparsely populated areas.

“A dry toilet can be used all year round in houses, summer cottages, public buildings and boats,” say the representatives of the Global Dry Toilet Association of Finland.
